Windows 11 FAQS

What does End of Support (EOS) of Windows 10 mean for ATMs?

Microsoft support for certain Windows 10 versions commonly used in ATMs has limits.

End of Support (EOS) means no more security patches, increased vulnerability, and audit non-compliance for the Operating System (OS).

Does Windows 11 for ATMs have any advanced features compared to Windows 10?

Currently, Windows 11 for ATMs does not have any advanced features over Windows 10.

Is There a Cost To Upgrade ATMs from Windows 10 to Windows 11?

Yes, each Windows LTSC version requires its own license. There is no free upgrade path between LTSC versions.

Budgeting for new Operating System (OS) licenses is key to any migration plan.

Does The Windows 11 Migration Timeline Vary Depending on ATM Manufacturer?

Yes, Diebold, Hyosung and NCR Atleos each have different timelines and vendor strategies.

What is Diebold Nixdorf's Current Windows 11 Strategy?

Diebold is positioned as an early Win11 adopter but their Windows 11 deployment was based on a pre-release version.

Windows 11 is currently available only on brand new Diebold ATMs. Existing ATMs, even those somewhat recently installed, will require upgrade or replacement because Diebold does not have public plans to support newer Windows 10 LTSC versions.

Current OS: Windows 10 IoT 2016 LTSB with an End of Support Date of October 2026 making migration planning urgent.

What is Hyosung's Current Windows 11 Strategy?

Hyosung is preparing for longer-term support of Windows 11 LTSC.

Hyosung’s current OS is Windows10 IoT 2016 LTSB with an End of Support Date of October 2026.

Hyosung recently made Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 (Version 1809) and 2021 (Version 21H2) available for upgrade licensing. But, migrating will also require core upgrades for ATMs greater than four years old.

This means migration planning is urgent. Financial Institutions with ATMs > four years old will need to consider the cost of upgrade versus replacement.

What is NCR Atleos' Current Windows 11 Strategy?

NCR Atleos’ Windows 11 strategy focuses on flexibility, stability and thorough testing.

NCR Atleos is actively preparing to support Windows 11, and provides current support for all 10 LTSC releases which offers significant longevity over other manufacturers.

NCR Atleos’ current OS is Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2019 (version 1809) offering extended support until October 2029.

If your NCR ATM had Activate Enterprise Software installed by DBE, your OS is Windows IoT LTSC 2019 meaning you have Windows 10 support extending to October 2029.

Another NCR Partner (Not DBE) Installed Activate Enterprise on our ATMs. Do I Still Have Windows 10 Support Until 2029?

It depends.

DBE purposefully waited to load Activate Enterprise until NCR’s OS was Windows 10 LTSC 2019 meaning ATMs with Activate Enterprise installed by DBE have Windows 10 support until 2029.

Activate Enterprise installed by another vendor may have a different OS with an earlier End of Support Date.

If you still work with that vendor, they can confirm. If DBE is now your ATM partner we will be happy to research this for your FI.

NCR Atleos Users Supported By DBE

Leverage existing Windows 10 support for longer timelines, continue strategic planning, and remain engaged with DBE regarding future Windows support roadmap and potential hardware needs.

NCR Atleos Windows 11 Snapshot

NCR is actively preparing to support Windows 11, current PC core hardware being deployed by DBE will support the recent Windows 11 LTSC.
